Aurora is...
Jeff Cooke - Guitars / Vocals / (occasional) Bass
Skye Horton - Bass / (occasional) Guitars
Chris Nicoloff - Drums
Aurora is a 3-piece band formed in late 2014. Aurora is the Roman ‘Goddess of Dawn’, and hence the harbinger of new beginnings. The moniker was apt being that the band members have been around in various outfits, and the recent collaboration is a fresh new beginning for these guys. The stripped back and raw feel of a ‘power trio’ suits these professional players, as it gives each member more space to shine. Their sound is definitely steeped in the classic sound of the late 60’s and early 70’s with some crazy 80’s-esque guitar prowess thrown in.
The songwriting is split between Jeff and ‘Bassman’ Skye, with the two guys sporadically swapping guitar and bass roles. The lack of a dedicated rhythm guitarist only allows Skye to rumble harder with the massive vintage tones emanating from his cherished Starfire bass. Jeff effortlessly covers the rhythm and lead roles with a combination of delicacy and blistering force. Chris lays down the rock-solid backbone of Aurora with a combination of precision, skill and ease. Showing just what can be done with years of dedication and pure talent.
Jeff hails from the Midland region of the ‘Motherland’ and has been dabbling in the ‘dark arts’ of guitar since and early age. After a stint in University he decided to go fulltime as a musician and after playing some massive shows around the world, settled in Australia and is now tutoring the next breed of little rock n rollers. Skye was an early starter in his obsession with classic 60-70’s rock but took his time actually picking up a stringed instrument. After years of being a roadie and driver to the stars, and years of playing lead guitar in bands, he switched to bass and is also teaching his honed skills to the next up and comers. Chris started drums at 15 and trained with a Jazz pro from the Conservatorium of Music. By 17 he was playing around Perth in original and cover bands. After years of mainly cover acts and a hiatus in ‘family life’, Chris has come back hungrier than ever, and as happy as the proverbial pig to be in an original band of this caliber.
The band released their full-length debut album ‘Sister of the Sun’ at the end of 2016, recorded in Skye and Jeff’s home studios, with the multitalented Jeff doing the engineering and mixing duties. The mastering was completed by Lee Buddle, (WAPA) of Crank Recording and the accomplished and talented Sean Gollan from Glasgow in Scotland was the tracking engineer. A second album is already in the works.
